Accra, 27 May - Madam Salamatu Abdul-Salam, Chief Director of the Ministry of Health on Wednesday said the success in efforts to build capacity for African countries to deal with emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases depended on the political will of governments.

Cairo, 22 May 2009 - Between 13 to 20 May, the Ministry of Health of Egypt reported five new confirmed human case of avian influenza.

Cairo, 30 March 2009 - The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has reported a new confirmed human case of avian influenza. The case is a two and a half year old female from Qena District, Qena Governorate.

Nairobi, 27 March - The 4th meeting of the East African Community (EAC) Sectoral Council of Health Ministers has directed the EAC Secretariat to conduct a regional cross-border Avian Influenza emergency preparedness and response.

Cairo, 23 March 2009 - The Ministry of Health and Population, Egypt has reported a new confirmed human case of Avian Influenza. The case is a 38-year old female from Elfath District, Assiut Governorate.
Signs of drug resistance found in African H5N1 viruses
19 March 2009 - Scientists who analyzed 67 H5N1 avian influenza viruses from across Africa report that the viruses fall into three distinct sublineages, or families, and that some have mutations that make them resistant to antiviral drugs.
Kenya issues alert over Bird Flu threat
Nairobi, 17 March 2009 - Kenya in on high alert over a possible outbreak of bird flu, also known as Avian Flu. The warning was issued by Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Kenya Veterinary Department and Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) officials attending an East African region sensitization workshop in Nairobi.
