Dr. Mukanda has a MSc. in Development of Animal Production and Health Programmes and a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine. He has specialization in veterinary epidemiology, economics, jurisprudence, emergency preparedness, information systems and risk analysis. In addition, he has expertise in sanitary and phytosanitary, lecturing and training in animal health. Dr. Mukanda has more than 20 years working experience in animal health, information systems, regulatory matters, food security, international trade matters and regional integration.  Prior to joining AU-IBAR, he worked at COMESA as the Sanitary and Phytosanitary expert, at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MAC) in Zambia as Principal Veterinary Officer, where was also the head of the National Livestock Epidemiology and Information Centre with responsibility for disease and production monitoring, information dissemination and control and regulation. At MAC, Dr Mukanda earlier served as a Senior Veterinary Officer and Provincial Veterinary Officer, and was also a part time lecturer at the University of Zambia. He has carried out several consultancies and projects on sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS), biosafety, disease control and managing livestock data and information e.g. on the Damasyl and TADInfo databases. At AU-IBAR, Dr. Mukanda worked as the Technical Advisor of LEISOM project, where he provided assistance to the Project Team Leader and the Chief Animal Health Officer in project management and the planning and implementation of other programmes at AU-IBAR. His current functions and activities at AU-IBAR as Senior Programmes and Projects Officer include the facilitation and backstopping of programmes and projects, supervising the monitoring and evaluation of projects, contracts, resource mobilization and communication activities.
