TADs and Zoonoses
Transboundary Animal Diseases – TADs – spread easily and reach outbreak proportions and their control requires cooperation among several countries. They are of particular importance to food security, trade and development for many countries with some having public health implications – zoonoses. The huge burden of TADs and zoonoses suffered by Africa poses a threat to its people and animal resources as well as globally through the spread of the endemic pathogens due to increased movement of people, animals and goods.
AU-IBAR envisions to be a leader in the prevention, control and eradication of major TADs and zoonoses on the African continent through the analysis of the economic impact of TADs and zoonoses as well as the effect of climate change on the epidemiology and control of TADs and zoonoses.
To achieve this, AU-IBAR spearheads the coordination of prevention and control of zoonoses – One-World-One-Health – through advocacy and investments, institutional, technological and human resource capacity building, effective partnerships, mechanisms for collection, collation and dissemination of animal health information, mechanisms for disease early warning and emergency response, coordinated approach to veterinary training, establishment of institutional animal health structures and lastly, private sector involvement through private-public partnerships.
