 The Eradication of Rinderpest from Africa: A Great Milestone

Rinderpest is the greatest plague ever to assail livestock and wildlife in history. AU-IBAR has been on the forefront in the fight against the disease and Africa is now free of rinderpest. This book targets a wide range of stakeholders including policy makers, field epidemiologists and laboratory workers involved in the control and eradication of transboundary animal diseases. It can also contribute to the enrichment of veterinary education curricula as well as inform financial partners and other contributors in their efforts to support the prevention and control of other major livestock diseases.

Post Rinderpest Eradication Strategy

This document presents the post Rinderpest eradication strategy developed by AU-IBAR for the mitigation of the risk of the re-emergence of Rinderpest in Africa. The document begins with a brief summary of the Rinderpest eradication process in Africa and the lessons learned. This is followed by a qualitative analysis of the risk of re-emergence of the disease. Finally, the post-Rinderpest eradication strategy for the mitigation of the risks identified in the analysis is presented.

AU-IBAR 60 YEARS An African Success Story

AU-IBAR celebrated its 60 years of existence, the eradication of Rinderpest in Africa and the protection and development of animal resources on the continent on January 16th January 2012. To commemorate this occassion, AU-IBAR published a book accounting for the history, present and future of the institution.

Framework for Mainstreaming Livestock in the CAADP Pillars

In order to foster focused agricultural development in Africa, the African Union and NEPAD have launched the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) and AU-IBAR has been designated as lead institution for the livestock sub-sector and was tasked to develop a framework for mainstreaming livestock in the CAADP pillars.
