AU-IBAR asseses the status of veterinary training institutions in Africa

Nairobi, 28 January 2011 --  AU-IBAR has commissioned a survey on assessing the veterinary education systems and the status and trends of veterinary demography in Africa in order to identify gaps and provide basis for strengthening capacity of veterinary training institutions and Veterinary Human resources on the continent.

The global livestock sector has been undergoing change at an unprecedented pace over the past few decades and the speed of change has often significantly outpaced the capacity of governments and societies to provide the necessary policy and regularity framework to ensure an appropriate balance between the provision of private and public goods. Accordingly, the main public good in the context of livestock enterprise are training and human resources.

Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to address the future needs of veterinary human resources to backing up the currently ongoing “livestock revolution” and formulate guideline to bridge the gaps in human resources and training capacity of the veterinary institutions. The study will specifically aim at:
  • Identifying Veterinary training institutions / universities in Africa
  • To assess their Curricula and specialties
  • To assess the Capacities and qualifications of their academic staff
  • To assess the levels and sources of funding for the Veterinary training institutions
  • To assess the existing partnership, networking and accreditation mechanisms of training institutions
  • To determine the future needs of veterinary human resources and draw policy and capacity training guidelines
