James Kihang'a Wabacha, a veterinarian, obtained a Ph.D. and a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and a Master of Science degree from Free University of Brussels, Belgium. He started his veterinary career as a Veterinary Research Officer at the Ministry of Livestock Development, Kabete, Kenya. He has worked with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi, rising through the ranks to Associate Professor where he teaches clinical and food animal production medicine. He has practiced clinical and herd production medicine in food animals for over 25 years and has taken several courses in management of animal diseases including the use of Standard Methods and Procedures for Animal Disease Control at the Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture, Texas AgriLife Research, the Texas A&M University System, United States of America. He has had progressive experience in animal health research for over 25 years and has published over forty publications in various aspects of animal health and development. He has skills and knowledge of higher education management having been an administrative and academic head of the Department of Clinical Studies, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi for six years, and having taken several short-term courses in management including strategic faculty management, financial management and quality assurance at University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück, Germany. James has international experience in livestock development and in the last four years has been working with countries in the Greater Horn of Africa to implement sanitary measures to facilitate trade in livestock and livestock products in the region and with livestock trading partners in the Middle East. James is currently working with the Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), a technical office of the African Union Commission in charge of livestock development in Africa. At AU-IBAR, James has been a manager for several livestock development projects including the Somali Livestock Certification Project (SOLICEP) and a USAID-funded project, Standard Methods and Procedures in Animal health (SMP-AH) aimed at promoting coordination and harmonisation of disease control measures of trade-related TADs in the Greater Horn of Africa. In these responsibilities, he has been involved in project design, provision of project direction and management and coordination among various actors. James is also the Secretary of the International Scientific Council on Trypanosomiasis Research and Control (ISCTRC) at AU-IBAR.
