Know Your Animals Series

Did you know that Africa has a wealth of animal species with a diversity of indigenous, exotic as well as composite breeds? These animal genetic resources for food and agriculture are essential for Africa's food security and economic development, and contribute to the livelihoods of millions of people. But many breeds in Africa are threatened, and strategies for their wise use and conservation are urgently needed. Through the project "Strengthening the Capacity of African Countries to Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of African Animal Genetic Resources", AU-IBAR is leading the development of an approach for the conservation of animal genetic resources through the establishment of regional gene banks and networks.

Welcome to our new public education series "Know your animals", which will feature a monthly "Animal of the month". The series is aimed at increasing awareness and improving knowledge on the value of the animal genetic resources in Africa. It will cover information on geographic location, general description, key features, population status, unique genetic attributes, indigenous knowledge, key uses (economic, social, cultural) of the featured breed and references for further reading.

The wealth of information in this series has been generated by the AU-IBAR animal production unit.
