Regional Livestock Trade Stakeholder Workshop
Dates
22nd-23rd February 2017
Venue
Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya
Background
AU-IBAR and its partners, recognize that livestock trade is key to the livelihoods of many populations across East Africa, including those in arid and semi-arid regions where other economic opportunities are limited. Livestock supports about 17 million people in the Horn of Africa including producers, traders and other groups such as trekkers, fodder/feed producers and brokers who directly or indirectly derive their entitlements from livestock production or trade.
The demand for the livestock and livestock products continues to increase, and production is lagging behind the population and economic growth in the East African region. Live animal and meat exports to the Middle East continue to expand, as well as a rapidly increasing demand from domestic markets centred on the key urban areas within East Africa. Currently regional livestock systems face many challenges in achieving the quantity, quality and sustainable marketing objectives to address this demand.
It is recognized that there is value in bringing key regional stakeholders in the livestock sector together to assess the existing challenges that impede the flow and growth of livestock trade across the region. These Key regional stakeholders including: experts, development partners, livestock keepers and government representatives; can share their knowledge and experience to identify the regional challenges and the needed solutions to improve programing supporting the livestock sector. A public report of the meeting will be produced to share the information and conclusions from this consultation.
