The VET-GOV Programme launched Livestock Policy Hubs (LPH) in Somalia in two ceremonies held in Garowe, Puntland State of Somalia 19-20 June, 2014 and Hargeisa, in Somaliland 23-24 June, 2014. The ceremonies in Garowe and Hargeisa were held back to back with the launching of the Reinforcing Animal Health Services (RAHS) Project in Somalia followed by Animal Resources Information Systems (ARIS) training supported by the Surveillance for Trade Sensitive Diseases (STSD) Project of AU-IBAR.
The Garowe meeting was opened by H.E. Abdihakim Abdulahi Haji Omar Camy, Vice President and Acting President of the Puntland State of Somalia. In attendance were Hon. Prof. Salim Alio Ibro, Minister for Livestock Forestry and Range (MLFR) of the Federal Republic of Somalia; Hon. Abdullahi Duuale, Minister for Livestock and Animal Husbandry (MOLAH) of Puntland State of Somalia; Ms Daria Fane, Head of Cooperation EU Somalia Delegation; Dr. Henry Wamwayi, representing the Director AU-IBAR and Mr. Ibrahim Hared Director General MOLAH. In attendance also were Hon. Abdi Ismail Boss, Minister of Agriculture Puntland State of Somalia; Hon. Dr. Mohamed Gaeshaan, former State Minister for Good Governance in the Puntland State of Somalia; Hon. Guleed, Minister of Environment in the Puntland State of Somalia; Mr. Damiano Lotteria, the Regional representative of COOPI; and Dr. Paul Rwambo, representing the Regional Director of Terra Nuova in Eastern Africa.
During the opening ceremony, computers for use in ARIS were handed over to the Minister of Livestock and Animal Husbandry (NMOLAH) by the representative of the Director AU-IBAR.
The Hargeisa workshop was opened by Hon. Engineer Abdirahman Jama Abdalla, the State Minister in the Ministry of Livestock. In attendance were Mr. Phillipe Durand, representing the EU Delegation to Somalia; Dr. Henry Wamwayi representing the Director AU-IBAR; Mr. Damiano Lotteria, the Regional representative of COOPI and Dr. Paul Rwambo, Representing the Regional Director of Terra Nuova in Eastern Africa.
