Central Laboratory for Aquaculture Research (CLAR, Egypt)
The Central Laboratory for Aquaculture Research (CLAR) was established in 1978 as the National Aquaculture Center in Abbassa, Egypt. The laboratory aims to implement a research strategy for sustainable aquaculture and fisheries development in Egypt, integrating animal and plant production to meet food requirements and achieve self-sufficiency from fish protein sources. CLAR's research activities include reducing the animal protein gap, participating in the national plan for new graduates and youth job sources, focusing on fish and crustacean aquaculture in desert regions, and increasing fish production per unit area. It also studies hatchery problems for new native species, breeds fish strains, and coordinates fisheries research activities in Egypt. The centre also advises the government on research and management of living aquatic resources, produces low-cost feed for aquatic organisms, studies environmental, socio-economic aspects, and uses biotechnology for disease control.
Activities Undertaken
The Central Laboratory for Aquaculture Research has produced a policy brief titled "Tilapia Farming: Adapting Egypt's Success to the Rest of Africa," which provides insights and strategies for replicating Egypt's successful tilapia farming practices across other African countries to enhance aquaculture productivity and food security.
