Animal Health & Welfare

Our work aimed at protecting the health and welfare of Africa's animal populations is anchored by the Animal Health Unit.
Our team leads important projects changing animal health all throughout the continent, therefore advancing several efforts. Our successes has included the effective elimination of rinderpest, a monumental feat that has changed the scenery of animal health in Africa.
Apart from this turning point, we concentrate on the control and management of other endemic diseases widespread throughout the region. Our aim is to reduce the effects of these diseases by means of proactive policies and calculated treatments, therefore conserving the health and vitality of Africa's varied animal species.
Our unit gives increasing epidemiological and diagnostic skills top priority since this will enable us to react more forcefully to new health issues. Controlling diseases like HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) and SPINAP (Small Ruminant Plague in Northern Africa and the Near East) has been greatly aided by this focus on strong capabilities. Driven by innovative projects, we at the Animal Health Unit work for the ongoing welfare of Africa's animals.
