Key Activities Undertaken
Strengthening Fisheries and Aquaculture Governance in South-Eastern Africa
NAFIRRI has completed a consultancy on mapping data sources critical for fisheries, aquaculture, socio-economics, and environmental management in South-Eastern Africa. The study aimed to address the challenges faced by the region, which has some of the most biodiverse aquatic ecosystems in the world. NAFIRRI's approach involved scientific rigor and inclusive stakeholder engagement, ensuring comprehensive and actionable outcomes. The final report catalogues key data sources, identifies critical gaps in data, and provides a foundation for harmonizing data collection and sharing mechanisms. This consultancy represents a significant step forward in enhancing sustainable fisheries and aquaculture governance in South-Eastern Africa, equipping policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders with the tools to make evidence-based decisions for food security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.
Strengthening Connections and Rationalizing Fisheries and Aquaculture Platforms in Africa
A consultancy to rationalize existing fisheries and aquaculture platforms and networks across Africa has been completed. The initiative aims to enhance coordination, collaboration, and governance in the sector by reducing duplication, enhancing efficiency, and fostering collaboration among platforms. The team employed a structured methodology, including a comprehensive review, stakeholder consultations, proposed rationalization mechanisms, and a robust anchorage framework. The final report and knowledge product outline practical steps to streamline operations, reduce redundancies, and foster collaboration among existing platforms. The project aims to improve coordination and efficiency among platforms and networks, strengthen alignment with regional governance structures, and enhance capacity to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities in the blue economy.
Strengthening Fisheries and Aquaculture Networks through Functional Reviews
A functional review of existing fisheries and aquaculture platforms and networks, in collaboration with NAFIRRI. The review assessed the effectiveness of these platforms in addressing challenges and opportunities. The findings were developed into an information note for policy and decision-making. A consultation workshop was held to validate the report, leading to actionable recommendations for strengthening linkages between fisheries platforms, networks, Regional Economic Communities, and Regional Fisheries Bodies. The review aims to enhance collaboration and streamline fisheries governance.
Enhancing Regional Collaboration for Shared Fisheries and Aquaculture Resource Management
NAFIRRI lead a consultancy focused on strengthening regional capacities and systems for managing shared fisheries and aquaculture resources. The initiative aimed to establish stronger linkages with environmental governance frameworks, promoting holistic and sustainable resource management. Shared fisheries and aquaculture resources are crucial for African countries' livelihoods, food security, and economies. The consultancy adopted a multifaceted approach, including capacity assessment, stakeholder engagement, framework development, and knowledge product creation. Key outcomes included a comprehensive study, validated frameworks, and practical guides and tools. The consultancy laid the groundwork for stronger regional integration in fisheries and aquaculture governance, fostering collaboration, promoting sustainability, and enhancing capacity. By integrating environmental governance principles, the consultancy empowered countries to protect and sustainably utilize their shared resources.
Amplifying Voices and Strengthening Stakeholder Engagement in Africa’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector
A consultancy to enhance stakeholder engagement and consultative mechanisms in Africa's fisheries and aquaculture sector has been completed. The initiative aimed to empower stakeholders to take a more active role in governance and development. The fisheries and aquaculture sector relies on diverse stakeholders, including governments, communities, private sector actors, researchers, and NGOs. However, fragmented engagement mechanisms and limited capacity for meaningful consultation have historically hindered inclusive decision-making and collaboration. The consultancy adopted a comprehensive strategy, including stakeholder mapping and review, capacity building, consultation framework development, and validation of findings. Key outcomes include enhanced engagement mechanisms, consultation training, strengthened networks, and standardized approaches. This consultancy represents a significant step towards more inclusive and participatory governance in Africa's fisheries and aquaculture sector.
Empowering AU Member States with Fish Cage Culture Techniques
In 2022, NAFIRRI completed a training program for African Union Member States on fish cage culture techniques. The training aimed to enhance the capacity of fisheries professionals, policy makers, and stakeholders in Africa to adopt sustainable aquaculture practices and leverage cage farming as an innovative approach to increase fish production and ensure food security across the continent. The training included hands-on demonstrations, expert sessions, and interactive workshops. The training outcomes included increased knowledge and skills, improved aquaculture practices, enhanced regional collaboration, and capacity building for policy development. The program has laid the groundwork for increasing fish production across Africa, particularly in areas with limited access to traditional fishery resources. It also encouraged the adoption of climate-resilient and sustainable aquaculture practices, which are essential for maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems and meeting the growing demand for fish as a source of protein. The training report will continue to serve as a valuable resource for guiding fisheries professionals and policy makers in scaling up aquaculture and contributing to Africa's Blue Economy.
Developing an Effective Communication Plan and Advocacy Strategy for the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector
Collaboration between NAFIRRI and AUDA-NEPAD/ AU-IBAR is in place to develop a comprehensive communication plan and advocacy strategy for the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The plan aims to strengthen stakeholders' capacity to communicate effectively, advocate for sustainable practices, and engage policymakers and communities in safeguarding aquatic resources. The strategy will focus on crafting a strategic communication framework, designing an advocacy strategy, and building partnerships with non-governmental organizations, research institutions, community groups, and regional bodies. The expected outcomes include clear communication channels, increased stakeholder engagement, informed decision-making, and sustainable practices. The consultancy is currently conducting in-depth consultations with stakeholders and collecting data to tailor the plans to the unique challenges and opportunities within the sector. The project aims to drive the adoption of sustainable fisheries management practices, safeguarding aquatic ecosystems, improving food security, and boosting livelihoods for African communities dependent on fisheries and aquaculture.
Promoting the Uptake of Knowledge and Innovations for Policy Change in Fisheries and Aquaculture Management
To influence policy change in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors across Africa, NAFIRRI conducted a consultancy to promote the uptake and implementation of knowledge and innovations from previous initiatives, such as FishGov1 and Fish Trade Projects. The consultancy aimed to address barriers to effective policy change and improve governance and management of fisheries and aquaculture by promoting the integration of knowledge, innovations, and best practices into the policy-making process. The methodology involved a comprehensive review of existing policies, extensive consultations with key stakeholders, and capacity building workshops and training sessions.
Key findings included policy recommendations for updating or improving existing policies, the development of knowledge products to facilitate the adoption of effective practices and innovations, strengthening stakeholder networks, and increasing capacity for policy implementation.
