As part of the Platform, AU-IBAR commissioned a "Comprehensive Baseline Assessment of the Pastoral Livestock Marketing Chains in Kenya and Nigeria" within the Horn of Africa (HoA) and Sahel clusters. The study covered critical components of the livestock marketing chains from livestock production, aggregation, and mobility to slaughter, processing, and marketing, including cross-border dynamics, policy gaps, private sector integration, and climate resilience.

In light of the aforementioned, APMD is planning to conduct the “Stakeholders Validation Workshop for the HoA countries (Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia) with the aim of presenting and validating the findings and recommendations of the comprehensive baseline assessment conducted in Kenya within the scope of the Horn of Africa.

Specific Objectives.

  • Validate the findings and recommendations from the baseline assessment.
  • Gather stakeholder insights, experiences, and feedback to refine the national and cluster reports.
  • Facilitate cross-country learning between the HoA and Sahel clusters.
  • Strengthen stakeholder ownership of the study results and foster future collaboration in implementing APMD interventions.

Expected outcome

  • Stakeholder-validated national and cluster reports for Kenya (HoA) and Nigeria (Sahel).
  • Clear list of recommended priority actions to address gaps in the pastoral livestock marketing chains.
  • Strengthened partnerships among key stakeholders including governments, private sector actors, regional institutions, and development partners.
  • Enhanced understanding of regional trade, mobility corridors, and pastoralist integration strategies.

The workshop stakeholders' inputs and recommendations will inform the completeness and finalization of the reports, and the APMD implementation. Therefore, consultants will revise, update and finalize the two cluster and synthesis reports considering the stakeholders (including AU-IBAR) feedback and inputs.
