1st APMD Implementing Stakeholders' Workshop

Nairobi, Kenya- AU-IBAR, through the African Pastoral Markets Development (APMD), has gathered key stakeholders for a two-day high-level implementers’ coordination meeting aimed at aligning efforts and ensuring seamless execution of the 2025-2026 Action plan.
It is against this backdrop, therefore, that the meeting brings together representatives from Government Agencies, development partners, private sector actors along the livestock value chain to review, strategize, and refine the implementation roadmap for the coming implementation years.
Speaking in the opening session, Dr. John Chege, representing Kenya’s State Department of Livestock, underscored the critical role of pastoralism in Kenya’s economy. "Pastoral livestock is a lifeline for millions across Africa. By strengthening our markets, improving policies, and integrating private sector actors, we can create a more resilient and prosperous future for pastoral communities," he stated. He acknowledged the challenges—ranging from limited pastoral livestock marketing data to the vulnerabilities of climate change in the pastoral landscapes. He further reiterated the role of women and youth inclusivity in the pastoral market systems as a sustainable vehicle for the Platform.
Dr. Huyam Salih, AU-IBAR Director, represented by Prof. Ahmed Elbeltagy reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to ensuring pastoralists are not left behind in Africa’s transformation. She called on the stakeholders to foster accountability, inclusivity, and innovation in implementing the platform’s initiatives.
With a clear-cut roadmap in place, the APMD Platform is set to revolutionize Africa’s pastoral markets, fostering economic growth, resilience, and improved livelihoods for the pastoral communities.
