As part of its mandate, the project seeks to enhance continental visibility, share evidence and knowledge on pastoral market systems. Achievably, this strategic objective is being pursued through the documentation, synthesis and dissemination of proven models and best practices that can inform regional learning and guide sector-wide decision-making. Therefore, the development of high-quality case studies is a core contributor to SO1 and is expected to inform evidence-based policy dialogues, guide strategic investment decisions, and crowd-in private capital into livestock value chains.

Within this framework, Luna Export Slaughterhouse in Ethiopia has been identified as a priority case due to its integrated livestock marketing model, its strong export orientation and its demonstrated ability to catalyse value chain efficiency and attract private sector participation. Luna operates within a major livestock producing corridor and exemplifies how structured supply chains, quality assurance systems, and market-led incentives can transform pastoral production into competitive high-value exports.

To effectively position Luna as an exemplar for continental learning, there is a need for building an evidence base attributed to the collection of high-quality data, that will ensure the case study accurately captures operational realities, investment pathways and the broader market ecosystem influencing performance and scalability.
