The African Union-InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) are partnering in a Research and Development initiative under the Resilient African Feed and Fodder Systems (RAFFS) Project that is funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This partnership will draw expertise and information from ILRI, AU-IBAR and participating countries. At issue is the relative lack of data at national scale to understand feed availability relative to demand and to know what livestock are being fed, and how that information can be effectively be utilized to inform feed development, enhance capacities for early warning and to trigger remedial action to reduce vulnerability and forestall feed and fodder crises in the livestock sector. This basic information would also be helpful to inform the various Livestock Masterplans that ILRI and AU-IBAR are supporting.
The Inventory and national feed balance need enhancement for adoption and utilization in African Member States due to needs and gaps identified through the recently conducted RAFFS Project continently survey on the impact of the triple global crises (covid-19, climate change, drought and floods, and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine) on Africa’s feed and fodder systems.
The goal of the workshop is to consolidate the approach and methodologies for undertaking the Feed Inventory and developing National Feed Balances and strengthen country capacities.
