@2025 High level delegates at meat expo

Nairobi, 6 August 2025 — As the Kenya MeatExpo 2025 got underway at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) today, the spotlight was squarely on Kenya's livestock sector. At the event, representatives from various levels of government, the business world, development organisations, and regional groups gathered to discuss the future of the meat value chain in Kenya and Africa, as well as to showcase innovations, promote investment, and plan for the future.

In his keynote address, Hon. Mutahi Kagwe, E.G.H., Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to repositioning the livestock sector as a cornerstone of Kenya’s economic transformation.
“The MeatExpo is not just an exhibition. It is a call to action – a collaborative platform uniting stakeholders to transform agriculture into an innovative, commercially viable, and newsworthy sector,” he declared.

The Cabinet Secretary emphasized the critical role of livestock in creating jobs, enhancing food security, and driving inclusive growth. He urged all stakeholders to deepen collaboration, leverage their strengths, and actively reshape the narrative of agriculture as a modern and rewarding sector.

Dr. Huyam Salih, Director of AU-IBAR, congratulated the organizers for hosting a transformative platform that underscores the pivotal role of meat and protein systems in Africa’s development.
“The meat sector is more than an economic driver. It is central to food security, nutrition, and livelihoods for millions across Africa,” she noted.

She noted that during the Expo, AU-IBAR will showcase key continental initiatives, including:
•    Resilient African Feed and Fodder Systems (RAFFS) – addressing chronic feed shortages that limit productivity.
•    African Pastoral Markets Development (APMD) Platform – promoting inclusive market reforms through digital and policy innovations.
•    Animal Health and Welfare Programmes – spotlighting the continent-wide Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) eradication campaign.
Dr. Salih outlined AU-IBAR’s vision to develop harmonized regional value chains, enhance intra-African trade under AfCFTA, and build climate-smart livestock systems that are resilient to disease, climate change, and market volatility.
Her call to action urged all partners to:
•    Invest in sustainable and climate-smart systems with early warning mechanisms,
•    Harmonize trade protocols and animal health policies,
•    Strengthen public-private partnerships that uplift smallholders and pastoralists,
•    Recognize and support integrated protein systems, linking livestock, fisheries, and aquaculture.
“Africa’s agricultural transformation and food security depend on integrated, well-supported meat and protein systems. Collective action is essential now,” she concluded.
