Support from the Kingdom of Norway
Overview
The Africa Blue Economy Strategy, formulated under the auspices of the African Union, envisions an inclusive and sustainable blue economy that significantly contributes to Africa's transformation and growth. This strategy, endorsed in October 2019, encompasses five key thematic areas crucial for the growth of Africa's blue economy, ranging from fisheries and aquaculture to governance and employment.
In response to directives from African leaders, AU-IBAR, with support from the Kingdom of Norway, is leading the formulation of National Blue Economy Strategies for six African Union Member States. This initiative aims to provide technical assistance for the development of tailored strategies, implementation plans, and governance mechanisms to optimize blue economy potential at national levels.
The selected countries for technical assistance include Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Sudan, and Libya.

The ongoing systematic provision of support for the development of National and Regional Blue Economy Strategies is expected to extend to all AU Member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in need, aligning with the overarching framework of the Africa Blue Economy Strategy. Through technical assistance and capacity building, AU-IBAR seeks to facilitate sustainable blue economy development, fostering economic growth, job creation, and poverty eradication across the African continent.
