As the world commemorates International Women's Day, it is a significant moment for AU-IBAR, the specialized agency of the African Union for Animal Resources. This year is particularly important as it marks the first time in AU-IBAR's 72-year history that a woman has become the Director.

In her message for International Women's Day, Dr. Huyam Salih stated:

"As the first female Director of AU-IBAR in its 72 years of existence, it is a great honor to celebrate International Women's Day and the progress towards gender equality."

She emphasized the importance of celebrating progress towards gender equality, highlighting the African Union's commitment to empowering women across the continent.

"Our celebration of African women on this International Women's Day is a testament to the foundation of African families," the Director said. "Their incredible resilience and strength underscore the need to enhance their capacities in the field of animal resources."

The role of women in agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and aquaculture cannot be overstated. As Africa aims to unlock its potential as a global leader, empowering women in these critical sectors is essential. The Director stressed the importance of promoting gender equality in eradicating diseases like Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), ensuring that women have a significant role in resource development on the continent.

AU-IBAR's commitment to gender equality goes beyond words to concrete action. Through targeted initiatives and partnerships, the agency works to create opportunities for women in the animal resources sector, enabling them to make meaningful contributions to Africa's development.

As AU-IBAR and the African Union continue to champion gender equality, International Women's Day serves as a poignant reminder of the progress made and the work yet to be done. Together, we honor the resilience and strength of African women and reaffirm our commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive future for all.

In the words of the Director, "Let us celebrate the achievements of African women today and every day as we work towards a brighter, more inclusive future for generations to come."
