Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) for food and agriculture are essential for food security and contribute significantly to the livelihoods of millions of people in Africa. The African Union-Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) through the project "Strengthening the Capacity of African Countries to Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of African Animal Genetic Resources" aims at strengthening the capacity of African Member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to sustainably utilize and conserve African animal genetic resources through institutionalizing national and regional policy, legal and technical instruments that are crucial for judicious exploitation of AnGR in Africa.
The key result areas of the project are:
- Establishment of the status and trends of animal genetic resources in Africa.
- Development of Policy frameworks for the sustainable use of AnGR.
- Supporting and strengthening national and regional conservation and improvement strategies and initiatives
- Increasing knowledge, attitude and practice of the contribution of livestock and livestock sector to economic growth, food security and poverty reduction.
Referring to the last key result, AU-IBAR would like to commemorate the importance of animal genetic resources in Africa through the publication of a Special December 2015 Edition of the Bulletin of Animal Health and Production in Africa (BAHPA). The BAHPA of AU-IBAR is a scientific journal which publishes articles on research relevant to animal health and production including wildlife and fisheries contributing to the human wellbeing, food security, poverty alleviation and sustainable development in Africa. The Bulletin disseminates technical recommendations on animal health and production to stakeholders, including policy makers, researchers and scientists. The Bulletin is the African voice on animal resources issues specific to Africa.
AU-IBAR, therefore, invite you to send Abstracts of original work on any topic related to animal genetic resources in Africa. Topics can include:
- Breeding,
- Genetic improvement,
- Conservation,
- Population genetics,
- Genomics,
- Policy,
- Legislation,
- Socio-economic aspects of AnGR and,
- Any other AnGR related topic.
The Abstract should be a maximum of 400 (four hundred) words which should be submitted electronically via attachment as pdf file only to: The Editor-In-Chief, Bulletin of Animal Health and Production in Africa: nguetta.bosso@au-ibar.org and edward.nengomasha@au-ibar.org. Abstracts should be received no later than 30 May 2015. Once abstract has been accepted, full papers using the BAHPA format would be requested, and those should be received no later than 30 July 2015. Abstract should be in French or English.
