The launching of the Mauritania national livestock policy hub took place from 27th to 28th May 2014 at Wissal Hotel in Nouakchott. The Hub was officially launched by the permanent secretary of the ministry for rural development in the presence of his counterpart from the ministry for economic affairs and development.
The objectives of the workshop were:
- To validate studies carried out within the framework of PRAPS formulation. PRAPS is a 250 million US dollars regional project that will support pastoralism in SAHEL.
- To develop roadmaps for the finalization of veterinary legislation and capacity building of national stakeholders.
In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary stated that the advent of the livestock policy hub reinforces the good governance policy of His Excellency Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, President of the Republic, which is aimed at involving all stakeholders in the development of the country.
He further reiterated the priority given to livestock with emphasis on animal health, infrastructure development as well as technical and institutional capacity development.

He echoed his belief that the policy hub will be instrumental in policy formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
He noted with satisfaction that the first assignment of the policy hub consisted of reviewing the studies carried out as preliminary work to the formulation of the Regional Project on Support to Pastoralism in Sahel.
The workshop validated the PRAPS studies and developed roadmaps on the following:
- Support to modernization of veterinary legislation
- Capacity development of the policy hub members
- Capacity building of livestock farmers organisations
