Forty nine participants from twenty five (25) African countries, two (2) Regional Economic Communities (COMESA and UMA), UNIDO, FAO, WHO, EU, EFSA, COLEACP, CONSULTANTS, AU-DREA, AU-IBAR and AU-IAPSC met from 5th to 7th November 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in order to agree on the missions, functions and structure of the Food Safety Coordination and the Rapid Alert System Mechanisms for its establishment at the African Union Commission as a follow-up of the decision made by AU and EU Heads of State and Government at the Lisbon Summit held on 9th December 2007.
This second workshop is a follow-up of the workshop held from 29th to 30th October 2012 in Kigali, Rwanda.
The following countries were represented: Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Ghana, Gambia (The), Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome et Principe, Sudan, Senegal, Swaziland, Somalia, Tanzania, Togo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Uganda.
The workshop adopted the missions, the functions and three options for the structure of the Food Safety Coordination and Rapid Alert System Mechanisms.

The workshop also adopted the way forward that will lead to the establishment of the institution and recommendations.
AUC, EU, UNIDO, FAO, WHO committed themselves to work closely towards the attainment of the Food Safety Coordination and Rapid Alert System Mechanisms and to join effort for its operationalization.
