Training on Veterinary Legislation at Naura Springs Hotel, Arusha - Tanzania.In collaboration between AU-IBAR Reinforcing Veterinary Governance in Africa (VET-GOV) programme and FAO, a training programme on veterinary legislation took place from the 29th – 31st October 2013, in Arusha, Tanzania. It was attended by 41 participants representing the English-speaking countries of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC) and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD). These were: Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, and AU-IBAR VET-GOV Program staff.
This capacity-building workshop provided Directors of Veterinary Services and selected number of legal experts, registrars from veterinary statutory bodies and professional associations and legal advisors with the necessary information, updates and skills regarding veterinary legislation.
The main topics covered during the training were the international framework for veterinary legislation, drafting veterinary legislation, legislation on animal production, legislation on animal health and disease control, legislation on animal welfare, legislation on animal identification and traceability, legislation on animal feeds, veterinary professions, regional harmonization of veterinary legislation and principles of drafting a piece of veterinary legislation.
The workshop participants embraced the contents of the Legislation training workshop and the member states agreed to participate in the process of veterinary legislation review and update and the regional and national action plans were endorsed.
