EL NINO ALERT! How well prepared are we?

Kenya Meteorology Department has confirmed enhanced rainfall during October-December 2023 period. The El-Nino phenomenon brings intense rains, and while it might seem like a blessing to some farmers, it also poses a significant threat to our feed security.

Is El-Nino a blessing or a threat for fodder in our region? How well do we understand our vulnerability in terms of animal feed security? Are we adequately prepared when weather forecast reports and early warnings hint at potential threats?

Emphasis should be put on discussions on Kenya, and Africa’s vulnerability to animal feed security in the face of changing weather patterns. It is important to note the level of preparedness when the weather forecast warns of potential threats.

What short-term and long-term measures, as well as policy and institutional changes, can boost the resilience of our feed and fodder sector against climatic and non-climatic challenges in Africa?
