The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD-ICPALD) has formally validated its Regional PPR Control and Eradication Strategy (2026–2030) following a high-level workshop held 24–26 March 2026 in Adama, Ethiopia.

The validation of this strategy marks a decisive step toward eliminating Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in Eastern Africa by 2030. Its development was supported by a consultant deployed by the African Union Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources. The validation workshop brought together Member States and partners to review and endorse a technically robust, coordinated framework aligned with global and continental goals. The strategy is anchored on four pillars: risk mapping, diagnostics and surveillance; PPR prevention, control and eradication; strengthening veterinary services and legal frameworks; and enhancing coordination, partnerships, and resource mobilization. Its validation reflects strong political commitment and shared regional ownership, positioning countries to accelerate implementation while improving rural livelihoods, food security, and climate resilience through the protection of small ruminant systems
