The Regional Academy of Marine Science and Technology (ARSTM) conducted a training program for AWFISHNET members in 2023, as part of the FishGov2 Project. The training aimed to introduce value addition techniques, boost economic opportunities, and promote sustainable practices in the value addition process. Participants learned techniques like smoking, drying, freezing, and canning, which can extend shelf life and improve fish quality. The training also aimed to boost economic growth by enabling AWFISHNET members to diversify their fish products and maximize their income through innovative processing methods.
The training included hands-on demonstrations, expert-led sessions, and interactive workshops on marketing, branding, and export strategies. The training resulted in enhanced knowledge and skills, increased economic opportunities, improved market access, and sustainability in fish processing. The training represents a significant step towards sustainable development in Africa's fisheries sector, particularly for AWFISHNET members. By learning to produce high-quality fish products with environmentally sustainable methods, participants are helping to safeguard Africa's fisheries and respond to the growing demand for processed fish products.
