Overview
Who We Are
AU-IBAR, the African Union-Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources, operates as a technical office within the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (DARBE) of the African Union Commission. Our core mission is to coordinate and support African Union member states in harnessing the potential of animals, including livestock, fisheries, aquaculture, and wildlife, as valuable resources for human well-being and economic development.
An Africa in which animal resources contribute significantly to integration, prosperity and peace.
To provide leadership and integrated support services for the development of animal resources in Africa.
To support and coordinate the sustainable development and utilisation of animal resources to enhance nutrition and food security and contribute to the wellbeing and prosperity of the people in the Member States of the African Union.
Strategic Approach
Built upon the principles of subsidiarity and complementarity, AU-IBAR occupies an essential and distinctive role. We operate at both continental and regional levels, forging strategic partnerships with the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to achieve our goals.
Our Focus
At AU-IBAR, we lead the way in advancing the development of Africa's animal resources. By empowering and assisting African Union (AU) Member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs), our aim is to create an Africa free from hunger and poverty, where animal resources significantly contribute on the global stage.
Guiding Principle: Subsidiarity
A central principle that guides our actions is subsidiarity. We believe that activities related to animal resources should occur at the most local level feasible. AU-IBAR assumes responsibility for areas where national and regional bodies face limitations, or where we possess a distinct comparative and strategic advantage. This approach ensures efficient resource utilization and minimizes duplication of efforts.
