Animal Production
The Animal Production Unit is a dynamic unit committed to enhancing animal resource production systems and ecosystem management across Africa.
Within our unit, we have spearheaded key projects and initiatives that have reshaped the landscape of animal production on the continent. Among our noteworthy achievements are transformative endeavors in livestock, fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic biodiversity. By fostering innovation and sustainable practices, we have played a pivotal role in enhancing the production, productivity and ecological balance of aquatic environments.
Genetic resources stand at the core of our initiatives, where we actively work to preserve and improve the diverse genetic pool of Africa's livestock and aquatic animals. This focus ensures the long-term resilience, adaptability and sustain our animal populations, safeguarding against various challenges.
Our unit is also deeply involved in the promotion of apiculture and pollination services, recognizing the vital role of bees and their products in ecological balance and economic sustainability. By supporting apicultural practices and pollination services, we contribute to both environmental conservation, sustainability and income generation.
In line with our commitment to transformative impact, we have identified and supported priority livestock regional value chains, strengthen resilience in African feed and fodder systems in livestock, promoting African Pastoral Market Development platform. These initiatives aim to boost local economies, empower livestock communities and Pastoralists, and create sustainable pathways for the production and distribution of animal products.
As we navigate the complex challenges and opportunities in animal production, the Animal Production Unit remains dedicated to driving initiatives that foster resilience, economic growth, and environmental sustainability across the African continent.
