ADDIS ABABA – African Union ministers have endorsed a 10-year programme to transform fisheries and aquaculture between 2026 and 2035, with priorities including improved access to aquaculture inputs, stronger fish value chains, and more sustainable aquatic resources. AU-IBAR Director Dr Huyam Salih presented the Ten-Year Transformative Programme for Resilient and Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture at the closing meeting of the second Fisheries Governance Project (FishGov2). The endorsement marks the next phase of continental efforts to strengthen the sector, following two successive European Union-supported programmes.

Ministers of livestock and agriculture, along with representatives from eight African countries, have agreed to work together to strengthen livestock value chains, unlock investment, and expand trade across the continent. They were meeting at the Second Ministerial Deep Dive on Livestock, convened by the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and hosted by AGRA at the Africa Food Systems Forum 2026. The theme was « Scaling What Works through Regional Value Chains, Partnership and Investment. Ministers and representatives from Nigeria, Uganda, Niger, Mali, Malawi, Rwanda, and Ethiopia took part, along with the Honourable Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, former President of Botswana, and leaders from financial institutions, industry, and development partners. The session followed the first Ministerial Deep Dive, held in Dakar in 2025, where ministers from nine countries asked that the discussion continue and move from dialogue to action.
Africa’s livestock sector can show the way to greater self-reliance - 31 August 2026
Africa holds around a fifth of the world's livestock, and produces just five per cent of its milk. In B&FT, Prof. Appolinaire Djikeng (ILRI) and Dr Huyam Ahmed Mohammed Elamin Salih (AU-IBAR) argue that livestock is where the continent's food import bill of US$70–100 billion a year can start to fall. Not for want of solutions: Ethiopia doubled milk production in three years, and West Africa's Meliteji WASU project has reached over 600,000 families. What's missing is scale — financing, harmonised policy and value chains that work across borders, not just within them.

Kenya is set to take a major step in strengthening its standing within the African Union (AU) after plans for the construction of a new AU campus in Nairobi were unveiled. Once complete, the Campus will be the first facility outside the organization’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The development is expected to cement Nairobi’s position as one of Africa’s leading diplomatic centers and deepen Kenya’s influence in continental affairs.
The project came into focus after Principal Secretary for Livestock Development Jonathan Mueke and Dr Huyam Salih, Director of the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), visited the construction site of the proposed campus in Upper Kabete.
