AU-IBAR and Partners Launch Strategic Advocacy Initiatives for Donkey Welfare
AU-IBAR is involved in crucial initiatives to safeguard Africa's donkey population. The recently endorsed report, "Donkeys in Africa now and in the future" is set to be presented to the heads of state and government of the African Union during the summit scheduled to take place from 14-18 February 2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The report delves into the essential role donkeys play in rural development, environmental sustainability, and agriculture across the continent. AU-IBAR, in collaboration with Brooke, on 31st January 2024 met with Uganda's Minister of State for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries, Hon. Bright Rwamirama. The purpose was to update the minister on the report endorsed by AU-ARWE STC, crucial for the upcoming elected STC Executive Committee. The ongoing meeting in Uganda, from January 31 to February 2, engages with government officials and other stakeholders, to discuss issues on donkey welfare, gender considerations, socio-economics, and relevant STC decisions.
AU-IBAR's advocacy extends beyond Uganda, with planned missions in Cote D'Ivoire, Cameroon, Egypt, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. The Ethiopia mission, aligned with the Head of States and Government Summit, will also address Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), rabies, and raises awareness about donkey preservation.
Collaborating with key stakeholders such as Brooke, Brooke Hospitals of Animals, and Donkey Sanctuary, AU-IBAR recognizes the vital role of working animals, especially donkeys, in supporting the socio-economic development of rural African communities. This collaborative effort aligns with the endorsed decision of the African Commission to preserve donkeys. This decision further supports efforts in implementing the Animal Welfare Strategy for Africa.
With a specific focus on countries with newly elected STC Executive members—Cote D'Ivoire, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Uganda—AU-IBAR’s involvement in the advocacy missions aims to foster collective commitment. This commitment is crucial for fortifying the preservation efforts for the unique and invaluable donkey species that contribute significantly to Africa's sustainable development and attainment of Agenda 2063 – The Africa We Want.
AU-IBAR's and partners advocacy efforts are not just about safeguarding donkeys; it's a dedicated effort to honor and preserve the silent contributions of these remarkable animals to Africa's livestock sector and rural landscape.
