Strengthening Africa’s fight against Foot and Mouth Disease requires more than technical interventions. It calls for stronger networks, sustainable financing and coordinated continental action.

Speaking on 19 May 2026 in Paris, France, during the round table meeting “Foot and Mouth Disease: Headline Global Events” on the sidelines of the 93rd General Session of the World Organisation for Animal Health, AU-IBAR Director, Dr Huyam Salih, emphasised that quality Foot and Mouth Disease control and eventual elimination in Africa must build on existing animal health structures.

She highlighted the importance of strengthening the Regional Animal Health Network, Regional Animal Health Centres, and the Pan-African Regulatory Authorities Network for Veterinary Products to improve coordination, regulation, and the delivery of animal health services across the continent.

Dr Salih also called for Foot and Mouth Disease control to be integrated into livestock development strategies, noting that animal health services should be seen as a critical input for productivity, trade and livelihoods.

“We need sustainable funding through strengthened Public–Private Partnerships, and taking partners’ funds as catalytic, with countries taking the front line,” she said.

Africa’s pathway to Foot and Mouth Disease control depends on country leadership, stronger institutions, coordinated partnerships and sustained investment in animal health systems.
