AU-IBAR, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and the World Organisation for Animal Health have released a new policy brief titled “Accelerating Access to New Veterinary Trypanocides for Africa.”

The publication highlights the urgent need for safer, more effective, and more sustainable veterinary trypanocides to address African animal trypanosomosis, a disease that continues to undermine livestock productivity, rural livelihoods, and food security across sub-Saharan Africa.

With more than 100 million cattle and other livestock species estimated to be at risk, the policy brief calls for coordinated action by governments, donors, regulatory bodies, researchers and veterinary health actors to accelerate access to modern treatment options, strengthen regulatory systems, promote responsible drug use and support progress towards vaccine development.

The brief also emphasises the importance of public-private partnerships, surveillance, pharmacovigilance, farmer education, and regional regulatory harmonisation to ensure that new products are safe, effective, and protected from misuse, substandard manufacturing, and falsification.

This publication contributes to continental and global efforts to strengthen animal health systems, protect rural livelihoods, and advance food security and sustainable livestock development in Africa.
