Catalysing Transformation towards Sustainable Livestock Systems (LiveSys) - Fact Sheet

This factsheet introduces LiveSys, a global project implemented by GIZ on behalf of BMZ to protect climate, biodiversity and land through sustainable livestock systems. It sets out the project's rationale: livestock supports 80 per cent of poor households in Eastern and Southern Africa and contributes around 40 per cent of agricultural GDP in Sub-Saharan Africa, while demand for animal products is expected to double by 2050. Additionally, the sector accounts for roughly 15 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions and 60–80 per cent of agricultural deforestation, and agriculture and food systems received only 7.2 per cent of global climate finance in 2021/22.
The project works with global, regional and national decision makers across four fields of action: global agendas and advocacy, including a Common African Position on Resilient Livestock Systems; capacity development; knowledge exchange and networking, including South–South exchange; and mobilising finance. It is implemented in cooperation with AU-IBAR, ILRI, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, WWF, national ministries and development banks.
